Si algo me ha atraído siempre de la profesión de detective privado, es la cantidad de artilugios interesantes que hay para desarrollar con efectividad cada investigación.
De pequeña, iba al despacho de mi padre a ver todo lo que tenía en su oficina y lo que había escondido en aquellos famosos armarios a los que no me dejaba ir, pero que yo, atraída por su prohibición, decidí que sería el lugar perfecto para adentrarme en mis imaginarios casos que yo resolvería por mí misma.
De todos los que encontré, el gran descubrimiento fue el detector de mentiras o polígrafo que mi padre compró en Nueva York y que fue el primero en utilizarse en España en 1964.

Este aparato no entraña muchas complicaciones ya que, por medio de un manguito neumático colocado en el brazo de la persona y también del tubo de un neumógrafo, colocado alrededor del tórax, produce una gráfica, es decir, unas indicaciones de los cambios que se producen en la presión arterial del examinado, pulso y respiración.
Pero, además de estos registros, pueden también obtenerse gráficas o indicaciones de las contracciones musculares. ¿Cómo es posible? Muy sencillamente, porque los brazos y el asiento de la silla en que se coloca al sujeto se hallan provistos de fuelles metálicos capaces de registrar todos y cada uno de los movimientos musculares por leves o ligeros que sean, al mismo tiempo que la respiración y la presión arterial.
El examinador preparará un grupo de preguntas simples para realizar la prueba del detector que sean directas y poco ambiguas de forma que sólo se requieran un "sí" o un "no" como respuesta. Estas preguntas han de ser ajenas al objeto de la investigación. Intercaladas entre dichas preguntas intrascendentes, se han de añadir las que constituyen el objeto de la investigación. Y todas ellas se incluyen como testigo a fin de establecer las reacciones emocionales del sujeto.

Se considerarán signos de mentira las variaciones en el trazado de la gráfica de presión arterial o las alteraciones en la respiración en el momento de enunciarse las preguntas que juzguemos importantes.
Muchos son los que creen que pueden pasar esta prueba sin pestañear ni mostrar ninguna emoción que les delate, pero la realidad ha podido demostrar que se equivocaban.

No hay duda de que el mundo de los detectives privados es realmente apasionante.
¿Quién no ha pensado alguna vez en convertirse en un Sherlock Holmes e, incluso, en un Watson que pudiera estar disfrutando de las magníficas deducciones de su jefe?
